Why Lesvos
Lesvos
is a beautiful, tranquil and unspoilt by mass tourism island . Visitors
from all over the world are enchanted by its traditional charm and
hospitality. With at least 10
hours of sunshine every day of the year, Lesvos has to be the
sunniest place in Europe.
It is the 7th biggest of all Mediterranean and the 3rd biggest of all
Greek islands with a stretching coastline of 320 km. The island is 70 km
in length, 45 km in width with a geographical mass of 1630 sq. km.
Situated on the North East Aegean Sea, 180 miles from Athens and
8-10 miles from Asia Minor it is populated by about 110.000 people.
Among this number there are people from all over Greece as well as
4.500 Uni students in the University of the Aegean who keep the
capital Mytilini vibrant.
It is the perfect destination for any tr aveller
who wants to experience the authentic Greek island life, without being
worried if there are enough things to do. People in Lesvos have
kept tradition alive in towns and villages despite living thoroughly
modern lives. The island is almost self sufficient. The variety of
landscape, the award winning sand and pebble beaches of every size and
description, the mild climate and long hours of sunshine all year round,
the rich historical, cultural and spiritual perspective, make LESVOS
an island of many options and all seasons.
Infrastructure
Public Transport in Lesvos :
The island has a good network of roads , as well as transport facilities
- Taxis:
There is an ample supply of taxis, with ranks at the airport, in
Mitilini town centre (near the country bus station at the end of Odos
Ermou behind the Municipal Theatre) and in towns such as Polichnitos,
Kalloni, Petra , Molivos, Plomari , Agiasos, Eressos. Most other
villages have at least one local taxi.

Buses:
Mitilini town bus services
operate from Sappho Square in the middle of the waterfront and run as
far as the airport & suburbs in the south and Thermi in the north. The
airport bus operates approximately hourly through the day, with a
mid-afternoon break. Country services are operated by KTEL Lesvos
from the terminal in KTEL Square (Πλατεία
ΚΤΕΛ)
about ten minutes walk from the town terminal; walk south along the
harbour past the municipal theatre, then right and immediately left -
the terminal is on the left at the end of the street. A current
timetable for the main services is posted in the window of the ticket
office/waiting room; frequencies depend on time of year, day of week
etc.There is also an unpublicised network of local services connecting
villages off the main road with the through services, the best way to
find out about these is to ask locally.
Transport to Lesvos
Mytilini, the capital is a major port with two terminals : one
for commercial ferries and the other for passenger & car
ferries. There are sea links to Piraeus, Chios, Limnos, Kavala , Crete
but also to Turkey. It also hosts a considerable number of yachts
during the summer months and a new yacht marina is about to become
operational in Mytilini. The International Airport of Lesvos (
Odyseas Elytis ) is located 4 km south of Mytilini. There are
several daily connection flights to Athens, Thessalonica all through the
year and many more to other domestic destinations (Limnos, Samos,
Rhodes, Iraklion ) . From April to October there are daily charter
flights to and from various international destinations ( UK, Germany,
Belgium, Holland , Sweden .
Healthcare.
There is a hospital in Mytilini , with a ll
the up-to-date facilities and qualified staff. Health centres in most
of the towns in the island take care of the immediate health care needs.
British and other EU nationals are officially entitled to free medical
care thanks to reciprocal agreements.
Education.
Public primary and secondary schools provide a high quality education to
children. The University of the Aegean, an international research
oriented university, embodies the concept of a 'university- network'- a
network of schools and departments, dispersed over five Aegean islands:
Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Rhodes and Syros. It is an inspiring, innovative,
socially committed institution situated throughout the Aegean
Archipelago, the ancient cradle of knowledge.
The
National and Capodistrian University of Athens which was founded on 3
May 1837, (it was the first University not only in the
newly- established Greek State but in all the Balkans and the Eastern
Mediterranean in general ) also will operate a Department of
Palaeontology and Geology in Vrisa – Lesvos soon.

Telecommunications.
There is a good network service, which is getting better with broadband
services available for a large part of the island.
Costs & Safety
Low costs.
Even though the introduction of the Euro has increased the cost of
living, it still remains low. The friendly and hospitable locals can
teach you how to enjoy the simple things in life and reduce your stress
level to zero.
Low crime rates.
Lesvos, according to statistics is one of the safest places to live with
a practically zero crime rate. |
