LIFE In LESVOS ISLAND

Why Lesvos

Lesvos is a beautiful, tranquil and unspoilt by mass tourism island . Visitors from all over the world are enchanted by its traditional charm and hospitality. With at least 10 hours of sunshine every day of the year, Lesvos has to be the sunniest place in Europe.

It is the 7th biggest of all Mediterranean and the 3rd biggest of all Greek islands with a stretching coastline of 320 km. The island is 70 km in length, 45 km in width with a geographical mass of 1630 sq. km. Situated on the North East Aegean Sea, 180 miles from Athens and 8-10 miles from Asia Minor it is populated by about 110.000 people. Among this number there are people from all over Greece as well as 4.500  Uni students  in the University of the Aegean who keep the capital Mytilini vibrant.

It is the perfect destination for any traveller who wants to experience the authentic Greek island life, without being worried if there are enough things to do. People in Lesvos have kept tradition alive in towns and villages despite living thoroughly modern lives. The island is almost self sufficient. The variety of landscape, the award winning sand and pebble beaches of every size and description, the mild climate and long hours of sunshine all year round, the rich historical, cultural and spiritual perspective, make LESVOS an island of many options and all seasons.

Country services are operated by KTEL Lesvos from the terminal in KTEL Square (Πλατεία ΚΤΕΛ) about ten minutes walk from the town terminal; walk south along the harbour past the municipal theatre, then right and immediately left - the terminal is on the left at the end of the street. A current timetable for the main services is posted in the window of the ticket office/waiting room; frequencies depend on time of year, day of week etc. There is also an unpublicised network of local services connecting villages off the main road with the through services, the best way to find out about these is to ask locally.
